Open House - Ryan River Hydro Project
The Environmental Assessment Office is publicizing an upcoming open house and public comment period for the Draft Terms of Reference for Ryan River Hydro Project
The Open House is on December 4, 2008, from 4pm - 9pm
(Presentation by the Environmental Assessment Office at 7:30 PM)
Regional Power Inc. is proposing a 145-megawatt hydropower project that will include a 10-kilometre tunnel for the diverted water flows and about 26.5 kilometres of new transmission lines.
Why the concern?
The project is proposed in a grizzly bear recovery area that links coastal populations with wilderness areas further inland like the Stein Valley and Cayoosh range.
It was one of 11 rivers in the Sea to Sky recommended to be completely off-limits to private power development through the community planning process of the area Land andResource Management Plan.
The Ryan project is one of over 100 projects in the Sea to Sky, all of which are treated as "one offs" with no cumulative assessment of their total impact on the landscape.
Public will be able to learn more about and comment on the project proposal at an EAO public open house scheduled for Dec. 4.
WE STRONGLY ENCOURAGE YOU TO PARTICIPATE
The public comment period runs from November 13 to December 15
Other information and directions for submitting comments is contained in the attached notice.
